Jul 17, 2024 |

Travelling Mexico and showing difficulties and successes whilst working remotely, in part 5 we travel to a surf hot spot Escondidio, fully charged..

Welcome to part 5 of Travelling Mexico as a digital nomad, if you have not read them already check out our previous posts

The story continues...

Date Stamp: Wednesday 17th January - Puerto Vallarta to Puerto Escondido

From San Pancho, we took a Taxi back to Puerto Vallarta to catch our flight onwards...

We spent a lovely evening in Puerto Vallarta at a beach club where I indulged in ribs and battered prawns. For this one night, we slept at Guesthouse Adriana which incidentally is my wife's name. And the owner seemed happy to talk about their fabulous name, when I mentioned my name is David they moved on very quickly!

We left at 5:00am from Puerto Vallarta to travel to Puerto Escondido. We flew to Mexico City for our connecting flight to Puerto Escondido, where we arrived at approx. 3:00pm. The increase in the heat was very obvious once we left the aircraft. We managed to get a taxi right away which was a twenty-minute drive to the Ananda Guest House, a Yoga retreat, at Zicatela Beach in Puerto Escondido (Zicatela is the main beach of Escondido and is rated third best surf beach in the world, however this time of year it's pretty small).

Date Stamp: Thursday 18th - 19th January - Touring the strip

We are based between La Punta and Puerto Escondido. It was a big surprise to see how empty the beaches are. In the evening people do the same as in San Poncho, minus the clapping, it's nice to see lots of people. But it is in no way crowded due to the size of the beach which is massive! This time of year the swell is down although there are some clean waves towards La Punta. And I have a lesson booked for 7:00 am. We spent the afternoon and the next day enjoying some well-deserved cocktails and some of the local cuisine tacos with hot sauces.

Date Stamp: Friday 20th January 7:00 am - La Punta surf

Early start sun rises at approx. 6:30 am I have a short trek down the road to meet my surf instructor Emilio. We hopped on his motorbike and took a hair-rising ride 5 minutes along the beach to La Punta where there is a nice three to four-foot left-hand breaking wave.

Bit of miscommunication as most of the session we were doing beginner stuff but to be honest I only wanted to get back in the water. I got a few nice ones but the board was a log! It was great fun though and not too busy. Adriana met me and took some snaps. After the session, we had a delicious breakfast and I plan to rent a board for a few days. It's so nice to be chilling and relaxing but I'm still keeping up with what's going on at Zenler. And where possible answering Facebook questions or doing the blog. Make sure you check out the next instalment where I'll take you through my process to get a blog up on Zenler...

Getting into a routine of having a siesta at around 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm most days as it's just too hot in the sun. We are acclimatising to the heat but it's still hard work.

Date Stamp: Saturday 20th January - Whale Watching

working online and travelling - whale watching
Humpback Whale

Early start being picked up at 6:30 am for a boat trip out to see the whales hopefully! The trip lasts for about 3 hours and is limited to 10 per boat. We were picked up from the Escondido Marina, this trip did not disappoint.

For the first five minutes, we saw Green Back Turtles bobbing away on the water. There were loads of these, like 15 of them, throughout the trip. We also saw stingrays propel themselves out of the water a shimmer of green and the tell tail spike.

There were probably 20 boats all in communication with each other. So when one sees something it calls the other boats in and there is a race to catch the lead boat. On the first occasion, we raced in to see a humpback whale splashing its giant tail in the water countless times.  The next occurrence we had was a humpback came up right by us blowing seawater from its blowhole and submerging back into the depths. It was an awesome site to behold.

We finished off the trip by stumbling on about a few hundred dolphins going all around the boats and doing crazy summersaults. There were big and small ones and they seemed to follow us for a good fifteen minutes.

An amazing boat trip and as it was early in the morning it was not too uncomfortably hot...

Date Stamp 21 - 23rd January - Surfing La Punta

I'm getting into the routine of getting to La Punta at 7:00am, hiring a board, having a two-hour surf and then breakfast, a siesta as it is so hot, and then our evening meal. We leave tomorrow for Oaxaca, pronounced Wahaka, it's a 6am start with a seven-hour coach trip for only £28!

Stay tuned for the next instalment where I feature how I put a blog together on the road...
